Skull found on Nelson Lake Road confirmed as missing person from 1996

(SUDBURY ON) - The Greater Sudbury Police service confirmed today, through the Coroner’s Office, that the bones found in a wooded area of Nelson Lake Road, West of Demarais Road in Valley East belong a historical missing person. Alexander Sretenovic was last seen leaving his residence on Elm Street around 11:30 p.m. on August 14, 1996. Sretenovic was 29 years old at the time of his disappearance.

The disappearance of Alexander Sretenovic was believed to be suspicious at the time and an ongoing Criminal Investigation ensued.  Since that date, Officers and Investigators interviewed multiple people, investigated leads, followed up on tips and have conducted multiple searches of various areas based on information received over the years.

The cause of death has not yet been determined. Foul play is suspected.

UPDATE - Throughout the day, members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service Search Team and Uniform Patrol Officers accompanied by Dr. Fairgrieve from CFS continued the extensive ground search of the area where the skull was located.

Additional human bones were found and turned over to the Coroner’s Office and the Centre of Forensic Science in order to conduct additional tests to assist in determining the identity of the individual and the cause of death.

A post-mortem is scheduled for Wesnesday, May 29, 2019.

An update will be provided when more information becomes available.

ORIGINAL - On Saturday, May 25, 2019, around 6:20 p.m., the Greater Sudbury Police Service was contacted in relation to potential human remains that were located by two community members in the area of Nelson Lake Road, West of Demarais Road in the Valley.

Police attended and secured the scene overnight. 
This morning around 10:30 a.m. the Coroner and Dr. Fairgrieve from the Centre of Forensic Science (CFS) both attended the scene. It has been confirmed that the found remain is a human skull. 
The Greater Sudbury Police Service is working collaboratively with the Coroner’s Office and the CFS on this investigation. Further tests will be conducted in order to determine the gender and identity of the individual.
The Greater Sudbury Police Service Mobile Command Unit has been set up in the area and Officers will remain on scene while the area is processed. Members of the Greater Sudbury Police Search Team and Unfiorm Patrol Officers, as well as, the Ontario Provincial Police Cadaver Canine and his handler are conducting a thorough evidentiary search of the area.
