HSN monitoring Enteric Outbreak on 8th floor of North Tower

Health Sciences North is currently monitoring an Enteric Outbreak on the 8th Floor of the North Tower of the Ramsey Lake Health Centre. Symptoms include vomiting and/or diarrhea.

The hospital says that it has taken a number of measures to deal with this outbreak, including isolation precautions, strict hand hygiene, heightened infection prevention and control surveillance, laboratory testing, and enhanced environmental cleaning and disinfection. Additional measures may be required as the situation evolves.

According to public health information, an enteric outbreak exists when: you have Two or more cases meeting the case definition with a common epidemiological link (e.g. specific unit or floor, same caregiver) with initial onset within a 48 hour period.

Symptoms must not be attributed to another cause (e.g. medication side effects, laxatives, diet or prior medical condition) and at least one of the following must be met:
Two or more episodes of diarrhea (i.e. loose/watery bowel movements) within a 24-hour period
OR
Two or more episodes of vomiting within a 24-hour period;
OR
One or more episodes of diarrhea AND one or more episodes of vomiting within a 24-hour period.

There are no restrictions on visitors at this time. However, visitors are required to check in with the nursing station upon arrival to the 8th floor and to follow all infection control protocols, including hand hygiene and the use of personal protection equipment (PPE), where indicated.
